A Divorce Certificate is the document that states a Divorce Judgment is now in effect. When a Divorce Judgment is granted, the parties have 31 days to appeal it. When that period has expired and no appeals have been received, the parties apply to have a Divorce Certificate issued. The document requesting that a Certificate be issued is usually prepared by the party or their counsel. The original certificate is filed and retained on the Court file and the parties receive certified copies of it. A certified copy is also sent to Vital Statistics.

NWT Courts travel to most communities for court circuit. Many communities have resident Justices of the Peace who hold court when required.
