The holder of a border licence A is entitled to hunt game, subject to hunting regulations made under the Wildlife Act, in the area set out in Schedule A.

The holder of a border licence B is entitled to hunt game, subject to hunting regulations made under the Wildlife Act, in the area set out in Schedule A.

For example, the Superintendent may issue a border licence B to an applicant who lives in, or in the immediate vicinity of Fort Chipewyan, Alberta and depends on hunting barren-ground caribou as a means of providing food for his or her family or himself or herself.

The holder of a registered trapping area licence is entitled exclusively to hunt fur-bearing animals in the wildlife management area specified in the licence.

The holder of a hunting licence is entitled to
hunt big game of the species permitted by a wildlife tag
or small game authorization.

Licences and tags may be purchased from most ENR offices in the NWT. Licences and tags are issued for one year starting July 1 and ending June 30. The licence is valid for a species only during an open season for that species.

A General Hunting Licence authorizes the user to hunt, fish or trap in the NWT; this is for residents and non-residents.

A permit is required to use pesticides anywhere in the NWT. Contact your local or regional ENR office for a pesticide permit.
