The Residential Tenancies Act gives the Rental Officer specific powers and duties that are designed to resolve disputes between landlords and tenants who have entered into residential tenancy agreements.
The Rental Officer is able to hold a hearing when landlords and tenants cannot agree, or one of the parties needs to have a decision made that can be enforced. After hearing the evidence and testimony of both parties, the Rental Officer will render a decision. This decision has the same force as a Territorial Court order.
Applications to the Rental Officer are able be completed online in both English and French. Details of how to apply along with applicable fees are outlined on the NWT Rental Office website.
The NWT Rental Office is not intended to give you legal advice on your particular problem. Because each person's case is different, you may need to get legal help.
