The Corrections Northern Recruitment Training Program (CNRTP) provides the training that you will need to be considered for a position as a Corrections Officer or Youth Officer in one of the NWT's five correctional facilities.
Training spots are limited. Each person accepted into the program will be paid during the six week training program. Each training program will be followed by 14 shifts where candidates will have the opportunity to 'shadow' a Corrections Officer in their duties.
To be considered for the training, participants need to have the following qualifications and pass an interview process:
- Grade 12 or equivalency
- Satisfactory criminal records check
- Satisfactory medical assessment
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence and able to obtain a Class 4 Driver's Licence within four months of hire
- Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certification or able to qualify for certification before course completion date.
The training consists of 240 hours of classroom and administrative instruction, including living-unit management, defensive tactics, conflict intervention and crisis management, and standards for use of force. Participants are required to take part in a program of physical exercises designed to teach defensive tactic techniques. Training hours are 0830-1700hrs, Monday to Friday.
